AKITA HISTORY

THE NATIVE JAPANESE DOGS

The breeds recognized today as native Japanese Dogs consist of: Large dog--Akita; Medium dogs--Hokkaido, Kai Ken, Kyshu, and Shikoku; Small dog--Shiba Inu.  In the medium class, there is a great deal of overlap in terms of size, color, and type, although certain colors are associated more commonly with one breed or the others.  For instance, the Hokkaido is most commonly red with urajiro (cream to white markings on the points) or white; the Kyshu, white; the Shikoku, sesame; and the Kai, dark brindle.
