CANINE HEALTH INFORMATION CENTER
What is CHIC?
CHIC is a database of tests and test results submitted by owners
and breeders for AKC registered dogs.
What is a CHIC number?
Canine Health Information Center issues a CHIC number once in
the lifetime of the Akita and is issued because that Akita has a current OFA,
CERF and current OFA thyroid per ACA board vote and supervisory CHIC board
recommendations. While the number is issued only once, when you visit the
website, you will clearly see that all dates of last exams are clearly
visible. Reoccurring test results will be updated on the website.
What is required for a CHIC number?
Required - OFA hip clearance is after 24 months. Usually
done once in the lifetime of the Akita.
Required - CERF eye clearance is done every year until
around age 6 to screen for heritable eye disease and after that as often as
necessary for general health purposes. We've suggested a minimum of
every 2 years.
Required - OFA thyroid, done by the most sophisticated
and accurate method of immunoassay, sample must be shipped cold pack FEDEX
from your vet to any approved OFA laboratory.
Optional - OFA patella - optional test at this
time. Knee x-ray clearance, normally taken and submitted at the same
time the OFA Hip x-rays are taken, can be done at any time during the dog's
life.
Optional - OFA elbow - optional test at this time.
Elbow x-ray clearance, normally taken and submitted at the same time the OFA Hip
x-rays are taken, can be done at any time during the dog's life.
Who decides what test are needed?
All the tests and age requirements are set by the breed parent
club, in this case, the ACA Board makes the decisions. The ACA can also
add additional tests in the future.
What if my Akita doesn't pass one or more tests, can I
still participate?
Akitas that did not pass their exams will also be included in
the database, free of charge. The owner has to submit the test results and
allow them to be published.
Can I find CHIC information on relatives of my dogs?
The database allows you to search sire and dam and progeny,
as well. This is what CHIC is offering us because CHIC is a cooperative
effort between the AKC and the OFA.
Where can I find more about this?
All this health information is published to the one website and
is available at : http://www.caninehealthinfo.org
