Although a Canine Good Citizen award (CGC) is not an official AKC title, many Akitas have participated in the tests and received recognition for having basic good manners and behavior. CGC tests may be held by a variety of organizations, often in conjunction with other dog activities such as a dog show or obedience trial. Most tests do not require any kind of pre-entry, unlike the more formal AKC-sponsored events like dog shows.
The CGC is rather similar to a Temperament Test (TT) and consists of a series of exercises which parallel situations the dog might encounter in real life. He is expected to walk at the owner's side on lead and to be under control. When the owner greets a friend or just passes a stranger, the dog should be accepting of the person's presence. He shouldn't be panicked by strange sounds or situations. He should be able to stay in position when told by the owner and accept the attentions of a stranger just as he would have to at a groomer's or at the vet.
A CGC certificate testifies to your dog's good manners. It is certainly within the reach of any Akita with basic training and a proper temperament.
