CANINE GOOD
CITIZEN TEST
ACA will once again offer a Canine Good Citizen Test during the National
Specialty. The test will be held on Monday September 20, 2010.
The purpose of the CGC is to ensure that our Akitas can be respected members of
the community. We all know how important it is to show that our dogs are great
companions and that we are responsible dog owners.
The AKC's Canine Good Citizen® (CGC) Program was started in 1989. CGC is
a certification program that is designed to reward dogs who have good manners at
home and in the community. The Canine Good Citizen® Program is a two-part
program that stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good
manners for dogs. All dogs who pass the CGC test receive a certificate
from the American Kennel Club.
You can start working now and be ready to earn this important award. The
requirements are listed below. Before taking the
Canine Good Citizen test, owners will sign the Responsible Dog Owners Pledge.
If your dog
has an AKC number or an ILP number, please bring this information also, but it
is not required.
All tests are done on lead (we supply the 20' lead for the stay and recall
exercises). The tests include:
-
Accepting a friendly stranger,
-
Sitting politely for petting,
-
Appearance and grooming (you may bring your own
brush/comb),
-
Out for a walk (walking on a loose leash including a halt,
right and left turns and an about turn),
-
Walking through a crowd,
-
Sit or down on command/staying in place,
-
Coming when called,
-
Reaction to another dog,
-
Reactions to distractions (noise and movement),
-
Supervised separation.
No food is permitted during the testing and dogs must be on
either a well-fitting buckle, quick snap, martingale no-slip or slip collars
in order to pass (made of leather, fabric or chain). Leads should be
made of either leather or fabric and it is recommended that they do not exceed
6' in length. If you have additional questions, please visit the AKC
website at http://www.akc.org , or feel free to contact this year's CGC Chair Cynthia Hutt at
lapicfern@hotmail.com ,

ACA will sponsor an American Temperament Test Society, Inc., Temperament Test on-site from 9:00am to 3:00pm on Monday Sept. 20. All entrants must be available for the walk-through prior to the test. Dogs must be at least 18 months old and wearing a slip collar and 6' lead. See www.atts.org for a detailed description of the test. The TT provides a means for evaluating temperament and gives insight into the dog’s behavior.. THE PROPERTY CLASSES
Does your dog have an amazing coat, the best feet, a lovely tail? Can it do some kind of amazing trick? Now is your chance to have that recognized and rewarded—The Property Classes. Join us after the Futurity/Maturity judging on Wednesday, Sept. 22, for a little fun, a few ribbons, and prizes. Don't worry about grooming or dressing up. Just show up with your dog as bragging rights are established! We’ll have a cash bar with wine and beer and some snacks.
Dogs entered in each class are judged solely on the individual property that characterizes the class according to the Standard: best feet, best topline, best bitch head, best dog head, best eye, best ear, and for that extra something, the best trick on leash. This is a fun way to appreciate and recognize dogs that are outstanding representatives of one aspect of the Standard, regardless of anything else.
Entries are open to any Akita over 6 months of age and are $5/class. Preregister with the enclosed order form or at the Ways & Means table at the show until noon on Wednesday.
Pre-entry forms should be mailed with payment to: ACA, C/O R. Moore,
2102 Bugscuffle Rd. Lavaca, AR 72941-6036 Questions??

THE AKITA
PARADE
Featuring Rescued Akitas and AKC Title-Holding
Akitas - TT and CGC titles do not qualify for
this parade
PARADE OF CHAMPIONS & TITLEHOLDERS--The Parade, held on Friday, Sept. 24, spotlights the accomplishments of Akitas with achievements in many different venues, from champions to therapy workers. Introduce your dog at the special entry fee ($15) and take a turn around the ring to the accompaniment of your dog’s signature song. A write up of 50 words or less details all your Akita’s accomplishments and special traits. Tell us why he’s so special or what he’s done that’s funny, or just wow us with his win record! In addition, you’ll receive a Rosette with your dog’s name. Send your write-up and music request to Richard Shaw, dunes49er1@comcast.net. Please type or print very clearly so the announcer can read your write-up. For difficult names, a phonetic pronunciation guide would be appreciated! Dogs are taken into the ring in random order.
PARADE OF RESCUE DOGS-Another special group of dogs is honored in the Parade of Rescue Akitas. The entry requirements are the same; but the entry fee is reduced. ENTRIES MUST be made through the Superintendent, and you will receive a Rosette with your dog’s name. This is the perfect opportunity to show off your gorgeous family member. There will be one Theme song for the whole group. No individual music for this event.
The
content will be subject to the ACA guidelines printed below
1. No advertising of a breeding, planned breeding, upcoming litters or sale of puppies.
2. No advertising of availability for public stud.
3. The sire and dam must be identified and must state their registered names [unless the dog is a rescue]
