Wednesday Afternoon:

Offered to our Nationals' Attendees at NO CHARGE:

This presentation by the BetterBred for UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory on how to read and interpret the diversity test for the American Akita and even more importantly, the importance of this test for the health of our breed overall.

The Veterinary Genetics Laboratory (VGL), in collaboration with Dr. Niels C. Pedersen and staff, has developed a panel of short tandem repeat (STR) markers that will determine genetic diversity across the genome and in the Dog Leukocyte Antigen (DLA) class I and II regions. This test panel will be useful to breeders who wish to track and increase genetic diversity of their breed as a long term goal.

The goal is to test enough dogs so that no new alleles or DLA haplotypes are recognized. Breeders can use this test to choose matings where relatedness between the dogs is small as possible to avoid problems which come from inbreeding depression.

Please reserve your seat so we know how many people to accommodate.
