Join the Akita Club of America

Thinking about becoming a member of the Akita Club of America?

Welcome to The Akita Club of America, your best source of information about Akitas. We welcome new Akita owners as well as those who have had Akitas for many years. We are the primary guardian of the breed standard and code of ethics, and are deeply committed to protecting and improving the breed in America.

Our responsibility is to promote the health, temperament, conformation, soundness, and natural abilities of the Akita. Our members are dedicated to responsible breeding and ownership of the Akita. We advance and protect the interests of the breed through events like Meet the Breed at dog shows, education, health research and Akita rescue.

Our ACA members benefit from access to health information, mentors (we call them Akita Coaches), regional and national specialty show information, news about therapy, various performance and sporting activities, great Akita shopping on our website, and monthly updates full of information about our dogs and their accomplishments.

As an ACA member, you’ll have opportunities to support veterinary health research and Akita rescue operations, and to get to know and assist other Akita owners near you.

As an active ACA member, you’ll also join a community that shares your passion for the Akita breed, discover opportunities to be involved, and meet outstanding Akitas and their people. You will develop friendships through volunteer opportunities – all aimed at improving the organization and the breed.

The application process takes approximately three (3) months from the time we receive an application to the time an applicant is accepted into membership. When the Vice President receives an application, he/she determines that is in order and if so, submits it to the Board for review at the next monthly Board meeting. The names of the pending applicants are then printed in the ACA Update (ACA's official newsletter) for the membership to review. If there are no objections to the pending applicants, the Board makes a motion to accept the applicants into membership and the motion is voted on at the next monthly Board meeting.

Shortly after an applicant is accepted into ACA, they will receive a membership packet, this includes a membership card for the current year, a copy of the Constitution & Bylaws and other miscellaneous Club information. New members will also begin to receive the ACA Updates and information regarding the National Specialty Show and Annual Meeting of the General Membership. The Updates are now available online in the Member's only section.

To ensure that your application is processed without delay, please read and follow the instructions on the application form. If you would like to receive verification that we have received your application, please enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope with the application or a note with your e-mail address requesting notification via the internet.

If you have questions or need help locating ACA members or a local Akita Club in your area, please contact ACA's Region Representative for your area. If you would like additional information regarding health, breeder referral, genetics, education, etc., please contact the individual Committee Chairperson.

This application form must be completed in full before processing will occur.

Akita Club of America

The Akita Club of America is a member of the American Kennel Club and, as such, is the only National Akita Breed Club which is recognized and sanctioned by the AKC. About the Akita

A natural monument in Japan, the Akita’s proud heritage includes hunting large game such as bear, elk, and boar. This powerful and dignified member of the Working Group is renowned for courage and loyalty, but may not be tolerant of other animals. His luxurious double coat can include any combination of vibrant colors. Aloof toward strangers, they form strong family bonds. Highly intelligent with keen sense of humor, the Akita responds best to respectful commands and training techniques that rely on motivation rather than force. Strong-willed and proud, Akitas are not receptive to abusive methods. Akitas originated in Japan many, many years ago, and have been designated a natural monument of Japan. They are a large, impressive breed with natural guarding instincts. While generally reserved with people they don’t know, Akitas are affectionate with their family. They tend to be independent, and while they will always know where you are in your home, they do not need constant attention as do some of the more dependent breeds. For more about this amazing breed, please spend some time here at our site. There’s a wonderful world to explore.
